2. Statement of ideology

The Ideological foundation of Social Democratic Party of Kenya (SDP) is and will remain social democracy. The party ideology is at the center-left of the political compass. SDP is to gather citizens in a joint action to realize its ideological goals of social democracy as an ideal: a society of freedom, equality, justice and solidarity; a world of cooperation and peace; a clean and sustainable environment; an egalitarian Kenyan society where all citizens live a decent and dignified lives and where all citizens have equal opportunities for human progress. Towards realization of its ideology, SDP is to formulate and advocate for legislation of policies like universal healthcare, welfare programmes, fair labor practices and progressive taxation to redistribute wealth and reduce social inequalities. The party is to fight for social influence at the same time act as a community for the growth of social consciousness and unite social democratic thinking people in the national, counties and other spaces. SDP also seeks to be active on the international level.

3. Reason for the establishment of SDP

The reason for the formation of the Social Democratic Party of Kenya (SDP) is anchored from its mission statement which is to unite the people of Kenya and build a modern welfare Kenyan state based on political, social and economic democracy.

4. Principles and Values

The SDP Ideology shall at all times be guided by the following values and principles:

a) Freedom

SDP believes in freedom. Freedom is a power that transforms society. Freedom strengthens human resources and enables people to both achieve their full potential and strengthen their community on an equal footing with others. Freedom must not only be the freedom of the strong. No one has the right to act at the expense of others’ freedom and no community has the right to chain anyone’s individuality. It is an individual’s duty to act in accordance with the democratic rules of society without violating the rights or human dignity of other members of the society. Every person must be free of undignified dependence, misery and fear, with the chance to develop talents and become a responsible participant in society and politics. (SDP believes in freedom of speech, freedom of movement. Freedom to any religion and freedom for all.)

b) Equality

The SDP is fundamentally committed to creating a more equal Kenya that realizes the economic and social rights. The party believes that in modern Kenya, every person should have the opportunity to reach their full potential as an active participant in society. Therefore, to establish a true Kenyan republic, the state must play a proactive role in promoting equality and to do so by providing high-quality public service, investing in communities and social infrastructure, ensuring fair taxation that enables distribution of resources on an equitable basis, mitigating risk to individuals and protecting human rights and civil and religious liberties. SDP is against all forms of discrimination. No one shall be treated with injustice or derogatory. Gender equality is of particular priority to SDP and shall be accomplished in all parts of the society and institutions.

c) Justice

SDP as a party believes in justice grounded on equal dignity of every person. It is a synonym for equal freedom and equal opportunities, independent of background and gender. Therefore, justice means equal participation in education, work, social security, culture and democracy as well as equal access to all public goods. Where unequal distribution divides society into people giving and following instructions it infringes upon equal freedom and is thus unfair. Justice requires equitable distribution of income, property and power since major inequality in distribution jeopardizes equal opportunities in life. Equal opportunities in life do not mean uniformity but space for the development of personal predictions and capabilities. People are different however, natural inequalities and social differences in somebody’s origin must not become social destiny. Paths through life must not be fixed from the beginning. SDP rejects any form of privilege or disadvantage because of origin, class, colour, gender or religion. Performance must be acknowledged and respected. Property commits: those earning above average or owning more property than others must also contribute more on the welfare of society.

d) Solidarity

SDP believes in a solidary community. Solidarity means mutual attachment, belonging and assistance, it stands for a sense of community. It is through strong committed communities, that we best ensure the individual’s opportunity to live a good life and fulfil their personal potential. In a solidary community everyone does his or her best, and we help each other. The broadest shoulder carries the greatest weight. We have to stick together in Kenya. We reject the myth about everyone being the architect of his or her own fortune. Instead, we believe that all people have a responsibility for one another, especially those who are vulnerable. We must make sure that our fellow human beings and future generations, too have the chance to live a good and decent life. We know everyone can be in need of help. When this happens, a person shall never feel like a burden or left out. Everyone deserves to be treated with respect. We believe in communities in all parts of life: family life, work life, leisure life and politically. SDP seeks strong communities locally, nationally and internationally.

e) Democracy

SDP aim is a society free from class distinction, a society without prejudices and discrimination, where each individual has an impact on the development of the society as a whole. The party believes that only a competent, inclusive and open government, underpinned by transparency in political and administrative decision-making, can truly deliver the equal society and strong economy necessary for democracy to thrive. The Party is committed to building accountable institutions worthy of public trust. The Party believes in inclusive, participatory processes that encourage and value a broad spectrum of voices and favor a democracy that empowers people and those they elect to represent them.

f) Peace

The SDP believes in and supports peace. Peace is the precondition of all our hopes. It is a basic value of common interest to all political systems and necessary for human society. Peace is a necessity within nations. Violent ways of handling conflicts destroy opportunities for development and human rights. Education for peace must be intensified. The initiative for peace requires that different socio-economic systems and nations cooperate with one another for projects and peaceful coexistence.

g) Progress

The SDP supports a strong, stable and innovative economy as essential to realizing a true Kenyan republic. The party is committed to creating the conditions for enterprise and entrepreneurial endeavor to thrive. In parallel with entrepreneurial freedom comes social responsibility, which the party is committed to ensuring through legal and regulatory practice. The party believes in the importance of a vibrant and diverse economy which will promote businesses, both large and small, indigenous and international. The provision of good-quality employment that gives people the opportunity to earn a fair income, foster their talents and realize their potential is essential to this end. The party supports an economy where the rights of workers are protected and vindicated through collective bargaining and workplace democracy and where all those contributing to the economy through paid and unpaid work are valued.

h) Sustainability

The SDP believes in developing a sustainable infrastructure that serves communities, respects our natural resources and protects the environment. We are committed to coherent, long-term community development and planning to safeguard our country for future generations.

i) Internationalism

SDP values have no boundary. It seeks to fight in Kenya and the world to advance its principles. The party believes that cross border cooperation is beneficial. SDP wishes for a world order built on rules and norms, and not rule of power. Therefore, the party is in favor of active and committed cooperation between countries and people of the world. SDP believes and insists that Kenya should have a notable voice and a seat at the table in these areas where international decisions are made.
